GoldenEye Metal gameplay on macOS

A static recompilation of the Xbox 360 build of GoldenEye 007. The game code is recompiled ahead of time for ARM64, and a compatibility runtime provides the Xbox 360 APIs and GPU behaviour the game expects. It is not a full-system emulator, and there is no Vulkan or MoltenVK layer in the macOS release.

It is playable today: the single-player campaign, two to four player local split-screen, keyboard and mouse or modern controllers, and switching between the original and remastered graphics during play. The release is a Developer ID signed and notarized DMG. Players supply their own game files; the app does not include, download or upload game data.

How it works

  • The graphics path consumes the game's real command stream and shaders, translates the Xenos shaders, and renders directly through Metal: game commands, shader translation, Metal rendering, resolve, presentation.
  • The game renders internally at its native 1280x720. Bilinear, Sharp and MetalFX Spatial scaling bring that up to the window or Retina display.
  • A native launcher handles the one-time import and verification of the game backup, save backup and restore, a crash-aware Safe Mode, and a diagnostic export that excludes game data by default.
  • Controllers (DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox One and Series) can be connected or removed while the game is running. Layouts, per-button remapping and stable P1 to P4 port assignment are built in.
  • The repository holds the runtime, the recompilation toolchain, the Metal backend, the launcher and the game integration in one tree, with a test suite that runs under Metal validation.
